Since 1966, IDI Composites International has been shaping the future of thermoset composites from Noblesville, Indiana, where the company remains headquartered today. In 2024, IDI marked a new chapter in its history by relocating to a state-of-the-art, 120,000-square-foot manufacturing facility and research center designed to support continued innovation and growth.
While rooted in the Midwest, IDI has built a global presence, with manufacturing operations in the United States, France, Puerto Rico, China, and Mexico, serving customers around the world. As a family-owned and operated company, IDI is committed not only to the long-term success of its customers but also to advancing the innovation and sustainability of the thermoset composites industry for generations to come.
In 2020, IDI’s sister division, Montana Advanced Composites opened in Manhattan, Montana. At Montana Advanced Composites, we develop and manufacture hot-melt prepregs and other composite materials for aerospace, defense, marine, sporting goods, and industrial applications.
Composites International was founded by John K. Merrell, Don Steele, and Ernie Kitterman in Noblesville, Indiana. Products included electrical insulating materials and fabricated electrical insulating parts.
The original plant was located at 111 Conner Street, Noblesville, IN.
IDI purchased a 99,000 sq ft location in 1971 where they continued to grow until October of 2024.
Shortly after, IDI began manufacturing Dielectrite®. This was the first venture into the production of raw materials. Dielectrite® is still available in both sheet and bulk molding compounds.
IDI began growing their manufacturing footprint outside of the continental United States with a location in Caribe, Puerto Rico.
IDI continued to grow their BMC Operations in both Noblesville, IN and Puerto Rico.
IDI adds a 30,000 sq ft expansion to their headquarters in Noblesville, IN
During this decade, IDI also made it’s first international expansion with the additions of IDI UK and IDI China.
Acquired Menzolit assets in France and China.
The French acquisition allowed IDI to establish a manufacturing plant in Vineuil, France where IDI Europe is still located.
IDI Opens the 3i Composites Technology Center for research and development of new and innovative materials.
IDI Continues to grow their global footprint with a joint venture manufacturing facility in Mexico City, Mexico.
IDI Celebrates their 50th Anniversary
Montana Advanced Composites, IDI’s sister company opens in Manhattan, MT.
IDI also builds a new state of the art facility.
The new facility offers 2 times the production capacity of their previous site while maintaining the same square footage footprint.
