IDI Composites International, the premier global formulator and manufacturer of thermoset molding compounds, recently collaborated with a leading molder and IDI’s licensee in Australia to develop a Bulk Molding Compound (BMC) solution for Krix Loudspeakers of Australia. BMC, a composite consisting of fiber reinforcement in a polymer resin, was chosen by Krix to be used in the company’s cinema speaker horns.

The BMC formulation used by Krix, which provides excellent vibration dampening and improves the overall quality of sound, is produced by Amtrade International Pty Ltd, IDI Composites’ exclusive licensee and manufacturer of BMC in Australia. Amtrade worked with Australian molding firm R.E. Davison to develop the specific Krix formulation. R.E. Davison also developed the tooling for the application.

BMC is suitable for closed molding, which enables manufacturers to create complex shapes that would not be possible using traditional hand lay-up processes, which are also frequently slow and costly. The material can be painted to meet specific appearance requirements.
