New Thermoset Composite for Heavy Truck Market

IDI Composites International, the premier global formulator and manufacturer of thermoset molding compounds, announces a new sheet molding compound (SMC) developed to meet the unique material requirements of the heavy truck market: SMC AV-206. The new material, available in either 100% vinylester or polyester/vinylester blends, is an ideal replacement for aluminum die-cast under-the-hood components due to its high physical and mechanical strengths.
Valve covers traditionally made from a costly aluminum die-cast are now being molded with thermoset SMC AV-206. The new material features 35% glass content, giving it superior dimensional stability and a high strength-to-weight ratio. The new material also has an excellent NVH (Noise Vibration Harshness) rating, making it effective in dampening normal harmonic vibration. Other features of SMC AV-206 that make it ideal for heavy truck applications include:
• Heat resistance
• Corrosion resistance
• Electrically non-conductive
• Lightweight
An additional benefit of switching from metal to SMC AV-206 is parts consolidation due to the ability to mold smaller sub components rather than fabricate them separately. SMC AV-206 also dramatically reduces secondary operations typical of aluminum die-cast components, such as machining and drilling.
SMC AV-206 is well suited for a variety of applications in the heavy truck market, including oil drain pans, timing chain covers, and intake manifolds.
