IDI Composites International S42 and S52 Lines of Sheet Molding Compound Receive Docket 90-A Recommendation

S42 and S52 Sheet Molding Compound receive Docket 90-A Recommendation for Smoke Emission and Flammability.

IDI Composites International, a global custom formulator and manufacturer of thermoset molding compounds is pleased to announce that their S42 and S52 lines of Sheet Molding Compound (SMC) meets the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) recommendation Docket 90-A for smoke emission and flammability.

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA), a branch of the Department of Transportation, created the Docket 90-A recommendation to classify products that have met their flammability and smoke emissions recommendations. Docket 90-A is a voluntary test procedure, which addresses the major concerns of smoke emission and behavior during ignition for materials used in mass transit applications. To determine suitability, two tests are used – ASTM E-162 for flammability and ASTM E-662 for smoke emission. S42 and S52 passed both tests well under Docket 90-A requirements.

S52 was developed primarily for use in the mass transit market. S42 was developed for use in mass transit and construction, and is suitable for both class B (appearance grade applications) and class A (non-appearance applications) as defined by ASTM E84 (Standard Test Method for Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials). The flame spread index and smoke developed index values obtained by the ASTM E84 test are used by building code officials and regulatory agencies in the acceptance of interior finish materials for various applications. Both materials are appropriate when high mechanical strength is needed and smoke and flammability are of concern.
