Thermoset Composites Provide Superior Dielectric Properties to Commercial and Residential Lighting Markets

Featuring a high total reflectance (TR) value, thermoset sheet molding compound (SMC) is ideal for high-intensity discharge (HID) lighting fixtures, from architectural to safety applications. The material's excellent dielectric properties is SMC’s greatest attribute for these applications. Using SMC, manufacturers are able to mold terminal blocks directly into the fixture, thus eliminating secondary operations. This offers a distinct advantage over traditional polished metal assemblies that require separate terminal blocks that must be individually fabricated and then assembled into the final part. In addition to the cost savings realized by molding reflectors with thermoset SMC, thermoset composites for lighting offer other distinct advantages over alternative materials, including:

  • Structural rigidity and weight;
  • Dimensional control;
  • Resistance to natural elements;
  • Resistance to UV deterioration;
  • Highest flame retardant value available;
  • Ability to mold to net shape due to zero shrink.
