Automobile Lighting Presents Special Thermal and Aesthetic Challenges

Thermoset Bulk Molding Compound (BMC) is ideal for high-temperature lighting applications, such as automotive headlamp housings. The use of thermoset composites for forward lighting has revolutionized the design of automotive head lamps. For example, IDI's A-102-8 BMC and A-103 BMC composite materials have been specifically formulated for injection molding of automotive headlamp reflectors. These performance automotive composites exhibit high strength and extremely low weight loss factors, with exceptional anti-fogging capability. IDI's thermoset materials offer other composite properties, such as an excellent surface profile for basecoat adhesion, improving the overall aesthetics of the molded part after metallization. A-102-8 and A-103 are also dimensionally stable, and maintain their shape during temperature fluctuations during the automotive assembly process.

Other benefits include:
  • Light weight;
  • UV resistance;
  • Moisture resistance;
  • Corrosion resistance;
  • Electrical insulation;
  • Dielectric strength.
